Keynote: Steven R. Aragon, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Human Resource Education & Educational Psychology and President-elect, Association for Career and Technical Education Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Aragon is known for is work and research in post-secondary education, teaching and learning models for post-secondary minority and non-traditional students and minority student development in community college settings. He is editor of the books Beyond Access: Methods for increasing retention and learning among minority students and Facilitation learning in online environments, both published by Jossey-Bass, San Francisco. He is a contributor to eight professional publications and author or co-author of more than 20 journal articles in professional publications and has served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on 10 grants dealing with educational models and programs. He holds BA, MA and PhD degrees from the University of New Mexico

Plenary 1: Dennis L. Soden, PhD, Western Hemispheric Trade Professor of Policy Studies and Executive Director, Institute for Policy and Economic Development, at the University of Texas at El Paso.
Under Dr. Soden’s leadership, the Institute for Policy and Economic Development has developed to host academic programs, including the Masters in Public Administration and a graduate program in Leadership Studies, research, and conduct public programs and outreach. The Institute’s 100-plus graduate students and on-going strategic planning process make it capable of responding to markets and marketing academic programs and research nationally and internationally. Dr. Soden has been awarded contracts for mapping regional infrastructure through 2050, for studying economic impacts of regional business and programs and for performing an analysis of the Medical Center of the Americas. He is the author or co-authors of more than 80 books, chapters and monographs and of more than 90 reports of research for public agencies and industry. He is know for his expertise in environmental impact, community growth and development and academic innovation. He has served as Director of the Southwest Social Science Research Center and professor of environmental studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He was interim director of the Whitman Center for State and Local Government and Director of Coastal Zone Management Studies at the University of West Florida, Pensacola. Dr. Soden hold a BS degree from the University of California, Riverside, and MA from the University of Southern California and the PhD from Washington State University.

Plenary 2: Ronald Johnson, DDS, Chief Academic Diversity Officer and Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
Dr. Johnson served as dean of the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston from 1996 to 2002. He is the principal investigator for an educational research grant entitled “Targeted Early-Intervention and Retention of Underrepresented Minority Students” funded in 2005 by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. He previously collaborated with faculty from three academic nursing programs on a project entitled “Consortium for Advancing Nursing Diversity and Opportunity (CANDO)” that has achieved am 87% retention rate for at-risk baccalaureate nursing students. Dr. Johnson holds the DDS degree from the University of Pittsburgh and specialty certification in pediatric dentistry from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Boston children’s Medical Center.
Craig W. Johnson, PhD, Associate Professor of Health Informatics at the University of Texas School of Health Information Sciences.
For more than 33 years, Dr. Johnson has directed health science and educational research, development and education centers, taught and advised graduate students and university faculty in health science and educational research design, development and implementation , in choosing and conducting appropriate multivariate statistical analyses, and in the reporting and publication of results. Dr. Johnson is Co-principal investigator of an education research grant entitled “Targeted Early-Intervention and Retention of Underrepresented Minority Students” funded in 2005 by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Dr. Johnson holds BA, BS, MA and PhD degrees from the University of Nebraska.
