Health Workforce Diversity - A Personal Journey

Katherine A. Flores, MD, Assistant Clincial Professor, Family and Community Medicine, University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine and  Program Director,  Fresno Latino Center for Medical Education and Research (LaCMER)

Dr. Flores will share her personal journey through the maze of entering a health professions school. Having grown up in a Mexican farmworker family in the Central Valley of California, Dr. Flores found the academic world very intimidating; unfortunately, this remains true for many families today.

We will join Dr. Flores’ journey as she highlights the:

·     Value of pipeline programs in assisting disadvantaged students and their families;

·       Importance of diverse student body and faculty in health professional schools;

·       Partnerships and collaborations of all stakeholders in our academic health professions trajectory, including students, parents, teachers/faculty, community organizations, school districts, colleges/universities/health professions schools and employers;

Dr. Flores is a living example of how a diverse healthcare workforce can better insure an improved cultural competency in the care of patients and communities.
